"Sweets for my sweet, sugar for my honey ..." how carefree and light the lines from the band "The Drifters" from 1961 sound. In the meantime, however, we know that sweet sugar in truth does not have much of this lightness. On the contrary, it is considered the main cause of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The main problem with sugar is that it causes insulin levels to spike. The hormone insulin is produced in our pancreas whenever we eat sugar so that it can then be incorporated into the body's cells. However, due to the Western diet with its high and regular sugar intake, the pancreas can no longer rest and has to secrete insulin non-stop. A permanently high insulin level is not only unnatural, it also acts as a fattening accelerator. The biochemical reactions that convert sugar into fat run at full speed. Conversely, the way to burn the fat of the fat pads as energy is inhibited.
In addition, permanently high insulin levels can lead to insulin resistance. This occurs when the body's cells eventually become deadened to the insulin signal and no longer let in sugar. Even the dried red cranberries, which are usually next to the healthy fruit, consist of about 70% sugar. The substance that makes many people sick is freely available everywhere.
